As they while away their evenings at a suburban bowling alley, Marjan and his group of middle-aged friends ponder their mostly unrealised and squandered lives. Seemingly well intentioned and amusing at the start, the bowlers become more and more dangerous, as a foreign couple moves into their neighbourhood. From the perspective of the young couple, the misery of these suburban men is clearly visible. The bowlers interest in the foreign couple begins as a voyeuristic prank: theyll secretly film the young couple making love. But the prank soon evolves into something more sinister: xenophobia and a low-level fascism. The men resent the newcomers, especially when they compare the young couples promising life with their own dead-end existence. Adding to the ominous overtones of the mens behaviour is their Sunday hobby of hunting down stray dogs and killing them, in the conviction that they are performing a deed of social benefit.

Slovenian director Vinko Moderndorfer, born in 1958, studied directing at the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television in Ljubljana. He has directed theatre and opera productions, radio plays and television dramas. He has made documentaries from his own scripts and has published 25 books in as many years. Suburbs marks his directorial debut in feature film.
