A bizarre footnote from film history comes to life in And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself, an ambitious opus that casts a jaundiced eye on Hollywood and politics. Its based on a true story: in 1914, a movie crew went to Mexico to film general Pancho Villa, who was in the middle of leading a revolution in his country. With Villas war of rebellion against the Huerta forces going badly, he hits upon a brilliant method to finance his crusade. Actually, the idea is brought to him: American filmmakers D.W. Griffith and Harry Aiken, then busy at work on the silent masterpiece The Birth of a Nation, approach Villa with a request that he sell them the movie rights to his revolution.

Screenwriter Larry Gelbart and director Bruce Beresford use this mind-boggling situation to measure various Hollywood absurdities, but also to comment on the way showbiz has bent reality to fit convenient expectations. Antonio Banderas gets a full head of steam going as Villa. Still, for aficionados of movie lore, its an absorbing look back at truly wild days.
