The long-awaited second feature from writer/director/actor Agnes Jaoui has more than deeply satisfied the fans of her Oscar-nominated and Cesar winning directorial debut, The Taste of Others. At the last Cannes festival the film received a standing ovation. Brilliantly performed by a remarkably strong ensemble cast, this is the story of Lolita Cassard. She is a twenty-year-old who believes she is ugly and, at the very least, would like to be beautiful in her fathers eyes. Yet her father, the famous novelist Etienne, is a curmudgeon who is too busy looking at himself to even see his daughter. The one area Lolita excels in is her singing, and when her voice teacher Sylvia discovers who her father is she begins to take her student seriously. Sylvias husband is a struggling writer who could benefit from Etiennes patronage. Filled with lyrical music, this beautifully paced and always observant film examines fame, image and the power of both personal and public expectations. The dialogue is rich with irony and bitter subtext, in this captivating story about finding out just who you are.
