MY SUMMER OF LOVE
United Kingdom, 2004, 83 min, color
Awards:  Edinburgh 2004 - "Best Film"

In the dry heat of a Yorkshire summer, two 16-year old girls meet and become friends, despite the obvious differences in their backgrounds (Mona is local, working-class, clever and restless; Tamsin is moneyed, well-educated and cynical), and the increasingly disturbing presence of Monas older brother Phil, a born-again Fundamentalist Christian, single-mindedly intent on salvation at any cost. With its note-perfect performances (screen newcomers Nathalie Press and Emily Blunt, each superb, and a typically excellent Paddy Considine), its dreamy visual style and air of languid eroticism, this is British cinema at its most sophisticated and superb: watching it, the word masterpiece comes to mind.

PAWEL PAWLIKOWSKI
Pawel Pawlikowski was born in Poland but has been a British resident since the 1970s. He has directed documentaries for the BBC, starting with Lucifer Over Lancashire in 1986. His award-winning documentary Tripping with Zhirinovsky (1995) was the inspiration for his first feature film, The Stringer (1998), which was screened at the Cannes Film Festival.
