FEATHERS IN MY HEAD
DES PLUMES DANS LA TETE
FEATHERS IN MY HEAD
, 2003, 118 min, color

In Feathers in My Head, writer-director Thomas de Thiers intuitive, lyrical images draw us into one familys tragedy, in the small Belgian town of Genappe. Their simple daily routines are derailed by the disappearance of their young son Arthur, whose body is later found in a lake. Blanche, the boys mother, behaves at first as though nothing has happened, but as the film unfolds she reaches the limits of mourning. The memory of Arthur tugs her to and fro, pressing on her fragile mind with the dangerous power of the dead, as she fights to rebuild her broken soul.

The film abounds in eloquent images, from Blanches gestures of denial and turmoil to the directors excursions into delicate metaphor Genappes economic heart is a sugar factory, while at its periphery is a drainage system clogged with rotting beets; the flat horizon stretches beyond. The shadows of multitudes of birds haunt the waters their cries punctuate the air with a keening that gives voice to Blanches sorrow while animals prey on other animals. Each frame is a wonder as de Thier, in collaboration with cinematographer Virginie Saint-Martin, evokes a landscape and atmosphere that blend the sinister and dreamlike with the sensual.
