Hawaii, Oslo is the story of a handful of people who cross each others path without necessarily knowing each other, during the hottest day of the year in Oslo. We follow Frode and Milla, about to have their first child, who they are told will not live long. We follow Bobbie-Pop, a faded singer who tries to commit suicide. We follow Leon, an institutionalised kleptomaniac who is looking for Åsa, with whom he has a ten-year old agreement to get married. We meet Leons brother, Trygve, who fetches Leon at the institution to celebrate his birthday. The angel Vidar sees things no one else can see, and may be able to save everyone except himself.

Norwegian director Erik Poppe was born in Oslo in 1960. He was educated as a photographer and
worked actively for the Reuters news agency from 1983 until 1987. He got his degree in cinematography in Stockholm (1991). Poppe won the Kodak Award for cinematography at the Moscow International Film Festival, for his work on Bent Hammer's film Eggs (1994).
