USA, 2004, 100 min, color

For many of us the combination of Woody Allen and Will Ferrell would be enough in itself to make Melinda and Melinda a very appealing proposition. Combined with a judiciously assembled ensemble cast and a witty premise, it makes for one of Allen's most accomplished and enjoyable films in years. The film starts with a group of creative types (including the inimitable Wallace Shawn) riffing on the relative merits of comedy versus tragedy. Cut to parallel narratives, each of which begins with the same incident, but which develop along different lines as befits their respective genres.

Alongside Ferrell, a sparkling young cast including Rhada Mitchell, Johnny Lee Miller, Chloe Sevigny. Amanda Peet and Chiwitel Ejiofor work their way through the classic Allen themes - the fragility of love, marital infidelity, sophisticated romance, the inability to communicate. The original set-up allows the film a feeling of playful experiment, and gently teases the characters - and us - towards what we knew already, that comedy is funniest when it's spiked with bathos, and that tragedy frequently has a ridiculous edge. As one of the characters puts it, 'He's despondent, he's desperate, he's suicidal. ' All the comic elements are in place.
